The Nahuel Huapi Lake (Araucanian Indian for “island of the jaguars”) is the largest lake (210 sq mi [544 sq km]) in Bariloche and most popular resort area in Argentina’s lake district, lying in the wooded eastern foothills of the Andes at an altitude of 2,516 ft (767 m). The lake is dotted with islands. Its waters are deep (more than 1,400 feet [425 m]), clear, and cold. The park has facilities for boating, fishing, and mountaineering.
Many parts of the park are still covered by a layer of volcano ashes. I heard from another traveler that the big k42 trail running adventure series organized by Patagonia eventual held as scheduled here regardless of the deep ashes on the path. He told me that it felt like running on the beach.
